When I realised I was scheduled to share a post on this Sunday, the final day of the year, I had grand visions of what it might be, how I would luxuriate in writing a reflective, encouraging piece, inspired by the cosiness of Twixmas and an excitement for the year ahead.
Instead, I have chosen to rest, literally - as I write, with feet up on the sofa, ample cushions and a hot water bottle, candle and tree lights for company - and figuratively, on my laurels. There’s no end of reflective year-end posts floating around, on Substack and elsewhere, which I am indeed enjoying reading, but not quite convinced I have anything ground-breaking to add.
I have previously hinted (not very subtly) at how much I love this time of year, how I make time to dive into the Project You journal to close off one year and plan ahead for another, but mainly I really do try to switch off my brain, live in the moment, and move much slower. I know that may ignite an eye-roll in some (even in me!) but in these days where I don’t need to know the time, or be anywhere in particular, or check emails at regular intervals, I really find myself in a parallel universe where the days feel longer in the best way.
I have been pottering and reading and dozing and eating without an inch of guilt. Productivity takes on a new meaning, including but not limited too, watching Christmas movies, making space on my bookshelves, finishing one book so I can eagerly start another, reading papers and magazines over morning coffee, home yoga as a reason to change from PJs into clothes (but not always), walks around the village for fresh air (sadly battling wind and rain, rather than idyllic snow), and of course some visiting and hosting of loved ones. It does not mean producing or outputting anything new, as much as I do enjoy writing here, and am excited to continue doing so into 2024.
So, instead, here is a recap of all that I have shared on
this year - ten and a half months worth of work and words. Some of you might have studiously read each of these in real time, but perhaps there’ll be something here of interest to revisit, or maybe you’re relatively new to the musings, meanderings and methods shared by this millennial woman, and will enjoy dipping into a few of the earlier posts.Either way, thank you for reading, today, this year, and - I hope - in the months and years to come.
Wishing you a wonderful new year’s eve, and the best start to 2024. 🌟
